Protein is a nitrogenous organic compound that comprises one more chain of amino acid residues joined together by peptide bonds. Protein plays a very important role in the human body, by supplying us with the nutrients required to structure, function, and regulate the tissues of the body.

Effect of Protein on Our Body

Protein is a combination of 20 different amino acids which makes up 17% of our body; and they all have different roles. Unlike fat, protein is not stored in our body system; studies have also shown that each gram of protein contains 4 calories of energy.

Additionally, It’s recommended we add protein to our breakfast to sustain our body for long hours; because it takes time to digest in our body. According to the National Academy of Medicine, an adult needs 0.8gram of protein for every 1kg of body weight.

Out of the 22 amino acids in our protein; our body is responsible for 13 amino acids, while the remaining 9; are obtained from complete protein (like fish, meat, egg, and milk) or incomplete protein, like (Nuts, seeds, and vegetables). Eating enough protein can help in repairing damaged tissues, growth, hair growth, and shiny skin. It can also help in building our cognitive system which is essential for growth, especially for children.

Protein deficiency can cause poor growth, lack of body tissue, and weak immunity in children. Researches by Harvard, World Health Organization (WHO), and many health agencies suggest that eating foods that are rich in protein like beans, fish, and chicken in place of red meat can prevent the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, premature death, Bone health, and weight control.
